A year ago, AI-generated video was a novelty. Weird morphing faces, impossible physics, five seconds of footage that looked like a fever dream. Fun to share on Twitter, useless for actual work.

What AI video can do now

Complex actions. Walking, talking, and simple gestures work okay. Anything involving interaction between multiple people, complex hand movements, or precise physical actions still looks uncanny.
Text overlays. If you need text in your video — titles, lower thirds, call-to-actions — you'll need to add those in post-production. AI video models are bad at rendering readable text.

Five-second video ads for social media are a legitimate use case. Product shots with subtle motion, atmospheric backgrounds, and lifestyle scenes all work well. The cost per clip through API-based platforms is roughly $0.50-1.00, compared to $50+ for stock footage or hundreds for custom video production.
Website hero backgrounds
Those looping background videos on landing pages? AI generation handles these perfectly. Abstract motion, nature scenes, city timelapses — all at a fraction of the cost of stock footage.
Product visualization
If you're launching a product and need motion shots before the physical product exists, AI video can generate concept visualizations from product descriptions or reference images. Not perfect, but useful for pitch decks and pre-launch marketing.
Content variety
If you're creating content at scale and need visual variety, AI video adds a new dimension without the production overhead. A blog post with an embedded video clip gets more engagement than one with just images.
The practical workflow
